Reclaimed – “The Nokia Formula”

A picture of the classroom we were in today will be coming soon. A neat concept, it has two SmartBoards and a television using an xbox connect. Today is our last day for awhile with Kirsti Lonka from University of Helsinki. This had been a week full of learning, both content and soft skills. Her presentation style is quite engaging and I have a better understanding of what her article meant by engaging lectures in larger classes (even though we are only 22 students). We discussed the human brain, temperaments of personality, motivation vs energy, and the Nokia Formula. The formula by J.T. Bergqvist tries to represent mathematically how flow can work in groups. For example if all members are working at 100% you might say: 1.0 x 1.0 x 1.0 = 1.0

And if most are working at 100% but one person has some more input or energy or connections to offer you might say: 1.0 x 1.2 x 1.0 = 1.2

But if someone in the group is being toxic, by bullying or other ways, then it may look like: 1.0 x 0.6 x 1.0 = 0.6

Of course if you make larger group sizes and play with the numbers you can see the impact this could have.

We finished the class discussing challenging encounters and our instructors did role playing, guided by the students. Although we laughed at times, I don’t think that the humour took away from the seriousness of the exercise and I think it broke the ice a little.

Tonight we went on a Baltic Sea cruise and had dinner on the boat. It was an opportunity to connect with other students and see Helsinki from the water. Beautiful isn’t it? For dinner we had salmon soup which was salty but delicious. We played a game at our table called therapist, we got to know each other a little better. The boat went out near Suomenlinna the fortress island of Helsinki. And just before we came back to the dock a few of us somehow fell deeply into a conversation about one student’s goal for DETEF “how has/does teaching change because of Google”. It began with three of us and more and more joined in. It made me think of ETAD802 again and what happens with communities of practice (inbound, peripheral, outbound). What a great example. Oh and before I forget look at what I had for desert 😉
